  • OBIE AWARDS | Off-Broadway Theater Awards - since 1956. Annual awards originally given by The Village Voice newspaper to theatre artists and groups in New York City. In September 2014, the Awards were jointly presented and administered with the American Theatre Wing. As the Tony Awards cover Broadway productions, the Obie Awards cover Off-Broadway and Off-Off-Broadway productions.
  • Olivier Awards - since 1976. Presented annually by the Society of London Theatre to recognise excellence in professional theatre.
  • Olof Palme Prize - since 1987. Annual prize awarded for an outstanding achievement in the spirit of Olof Palme. The Prize consists of a diploma and 100,000 US dollars.
  • Ondaatje Prize - annual literary award given by the Royal Society of Literature. The £10,000 award is given for a work of fiction, non-fiction or poetry which evokes the "spirit of a place", and which is written by someone who is a citizen of or who has been resident in the Commonwealth or the Republic of Ireland.
  • Orwell Prize - since 1993. British prize for political writing of outstanding quality. Two prizes are awarded each year: one for a book and one for journalism; between 2009 and 2012, a third prize was awarded for blogging. In each case, the winner is the short-listed entry which comes closest to George Orwell's own ambition to "make political writing into an art".

  • Pollux Award - "The Photography Gala Awards." This Award is open to all photographers, professional and non professional worldwide, working in all mediums, styles and schools of thought. Traditional, contemporary, avant-garde, creative and experimental works that include old and new processes, mixed techniques, and challenging personal, emotional or political statements will be welcome.
  • Praemium Imperiale - (lit. "World Culture Prize in Memory of His Imperial Highness Prince Takamatsu", is an arts prize awarded since 1989 by the imperial family of Japan on behalf of the Japan Art Association in the fields painting, sculpture, architecture, music, and theatre/film. These are areas of achievement not covered by the Nobel Prizes.
  • Premio Nadal - the oldest literary prize in the Spanish-speaking world. Spanish literary prize awarded annually by the publishing house Ediciones Destino, part of Planeta. It has been awarded every year on 6 January since 1944.
  • Presidential Medal of Freedom - award bestowed by the President of the United States and is—along with the comparable Congressional Gold Medal bestowed by an act of U.S. Congress—the highest civilian award in the United States. It recognizes those individuals who have made "an especially meritorious contribution to the security or national interests of the United States, world peace, cultural or other significant public or private endeavors".
  • Primetime Emmy Awards - since 1949. Awards presented by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences in recognition of excellence in American primetime television programming. First awarded in 1949, they were originally referred to as just the "Emmy Awards" until the first Daytime Emmy Award ceremonies were held in the 1970s, and the word "primetime" was added to distinguish between the two. The Primetime Emmys generally air in mid-September, on the Sunday before the official start of the fall television season.
  • PRINCESS GRACE AWARDS - dedicated to identifying and assisting emerging talent in theater, dance, and film by awarding grants in the form of scholarships, apprenticeships, and fellowships.
  • PRINCE OF ASTURIAS AWARDS - annual prizes given in Spain by the Prince of Asturias Foundation to individuals, entities and/or organizations from around the world who make notable achievements in the sciences, humanities, or public affairs.
  • PRITZKER ARCHITECTURE PRIZE - since 1979. considered to be one of the world's premier architecture prizes. Awarded annually "to honor a living architect or architects whose built work demonstrates a combination of those qualities of talent, vision and commitment, which has produced consistent and significant contributions to humanity and the built environment through the art of architecture."
  • PRIX ARS ELECTRONICA - often called the Oscar of computer art. One of the most important yearly prizes in the field of electronic and interactive art, computer animation, digital culture and music.
  • Prix Cazes brasserie Lipp - awarded to a French novel every year since 1935.
  • PRIX DU DESIGN MYS - since 2003, the Prix du Design has chosen just one yacht each year that ‘has the most innovative, elegant and distinguished design at the Monaco Yacht Show.’
  • PRIX EUROPA - since 1987. "The European Broadcasting Festival." Europe's largest annual tri-medial festival and competition. Its open juries sample and select the best television-, radio- and online productions of each year. The festival takes place in the third week of October in Berlin and Potsdam and is hosted by the German broadcaster Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg (RBB).
  • Prix Goncourt - since 1903. Prize in French literature, given by the académie Goncourt to the author of "the best and most imaginative prose work of the year". Four other prizes are also awarded: prix Goncourt du Premier Roman (first novel), prix Goncourt de la Nouvelle (short story), prix Goncourt de la Poésie (poetry) and prix Goncourt de la Biographie (biography). Of the "big six" French literary awards, the Prix Goncourt is the best known and most prestigious. The other major literary prizes are the Grand Prix du Roman de l'Académie Française, the Prix Femina, the Prix Renaudot, the Prix Interallié and the Prix Médicis.
  • Prix Un Certain Regard - since 1998. To recognize young talent and to encourage innovative and daring works by presenting one of the films with a grant to aid its distribution in France. Since 2005 the prize consists of €30,000.

  • Rear of the Year - since 1976. Light-hearted British award for celebrities who are considered to have a notable posterior.
  • RED DOT DESIGN AWARD - an international product design prize awarded by the Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen in Essen, Germany. There are prize categories for product design, design agencies, and design concepts. Since 1955, designers and producers can apply for the prizes with the winners being presented in an annual ceremony.
  • RED HERRING AWARDS - awarding promising startups that will lead the next wave of disruption and innovation.
  • REUBEN AWARD - for Outstanding Cartoonist of the Year, chosen by a secret ballot of the members of the National Cartoonists Society.
  • RIBA | ROYAL INSTITUTE OF BRITISH ARCHITECTS AWARDS - RIBA runs many awards including the Stirling Prize for the best new building of the year, the Royal Gold Medal (first awarded in 1848), which honours a distinguished body of work, and the Stephen Lawrence Prize for projects with a construction budget of less than £500,000. The RIBA also awards the President's Medals for student work, which are regarded as the most prestigious awards in architectural education, and the RIBA President's Awards for Research. The RIBA European Award was inaugurated in 2005 for work in the European Union, outside the UK. The RIBA National Award and the RIBA International Award were established in 2007.

  • ROSE D'OR - since 1961. One of the most important international festivals in entertainment television.
  • Roswitha Haftmann Prize - since 2001. Prizewinners are selected solely on the basis of the artistic significance of their work, without regard to their personal circumstances (nationality, age, gender, etc.). The Prize worth CHF 150,000 (US$157,000) is awarded in Zurich, as far as possible during a public event in the Kunsthaus.

For 2013, the prize amount has been increased to US$1 million.

The Show is held in early July, and run by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) at Hampton Court Palace in southwest London. The show features show gardens, floral marquees and pavilions, talks and demonstrations. Erected on the north and south sides of the Long Water in Hampton Court Park, it is the second major national show after the Chelsea Flower Show but has a different character, focusing more on environmental issues, growing your own food and vegetables and cookery, while also offering opportunities to buy gardening accessories, plants and flowers.

  • Palio della Rana - (frog race). Every year, the Sunday after Easter (weather permitting), the nearby tiny town of Fermignano (Province of Pesaro e Urbino in the Italian region Marche) celebrates its independence from the Duke of Montefeltro in 1607 with the Palio della Rana - a frog race.
  • Palio di Siena - horse race that is held twice each year, on July 2 and August 16, in Siena, Italy. Ten horses and riders, bareback and dressed in the appropriate colours, represent ten of the seventeen contrade, or city wards. The race itself, in which the jockeys ride bareback, circles the Piazza del Campo, on which a thick layer of dirt has been laid. The race is run for three laps of the piazza and usually lasts no more than 90 seconds.

  • Ward McAllister - (1827-1895). Self-appointed arbiter of New York society from the 1860s to the early 1890s. Coined the phrase "the Four Hundred". According to him, this was the number of people in New York who really mattered; the people who felt at ease in the ballrooms of high society.

It was one of the last truly spectacular events in the famous ballroom, and it was one of the largest and most lavish social events of the 20th century.

Organizer and founder Gery Keszler is the “face” and engine of the Life Ball.     • ROYAL ASCOT - Tuesday 18 to Saturday 22 June, 2013. The centrepiece of Ascot's year, Royal Ascot is one of Europe's most famous race meetings, and dates back to 1711 when it was founded by Queen Anne. Every year Royal Ascot is attended by HM Elizabeth II and various members of the British Royal Family such as The Prince of Wales, arriving each day in a horse-drawn carriage with the Royal procession taking place at the start of each race day and the raising of the Queen's Royal Standard. It is a major event in the British social calendar, and press coverage of the attendees and what they are wearing often exceeds coverage of the actual racing. There are 3 enclosures attended by guests on Royal Ascot week. The Royal Enclosure is the most prestigious of the three enclosures, with recent visits from the Queen and Royal Family members. Access to the Royal Enclosure is restricted, with high security on the day. First-time applicants must apply to the Royal Enclosure Office and gain membership from someone who has attended the enclosure for at least four years. For existing badgeholders, an invitation is sent out by Her Majesty's Representative to request badges. The badgeholder's name is written onto the badge and can be used only by that person; the colours of the badges vary each day for one-day applicants. Those in the Royal Enclosure have the options of fine dining and hospitality, and a selection of bars. The dress code is strictly enforced. For women, only a day dress with a hat is acceptable, with rules applying to the length and style of the dress. In addition, women must not show bare midriffs or shoulders. For men, black or grey morning dress with top hat is required. £4.5 million in prize money.

    • The Met Gala - since 1946. Formally called the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute benefit and also known as the Met Ball, is an annual fundraising gala for the benefit of the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute in New York City. It marks the grand opening of the Costume Institute's annual fashion exhibit. Each year's event celebrates the theme of that year's Costume Institute exhibition, and the exhibition sets the tone for the formal dress of the night since guest are expected to choose their fashion to match the theme of the exhibit. Each year the event also has honorary celebrity event day chairpersons.

ASSOCIATED EVENTS: The 8th annual "Night Before", traditionally held at the Beverly Hills Hotel (eight years running in 2010) and generally known as THE party of the season, benefits the Motion Picture and Television Fund, which operates a retirement home for SAG actors in the San Fernando Valley. Elton John AIDS Foundation Academy Award Party airs the awards live at the nearby Pacific Design Center. The Governors' Ball is the Academy's official after-party, including dinner (until 2011), and is held adjacent to the awards-presentation venue. In 2012, the three course meal was replaced by appetizers. The Vanity Fair after-party, historically held at the former Morton's restaurant, since 2009 has been held at the Sunset Tower.

    • VIENNA OPERA BALL | DER OPERNBALL - February 7, 2013. Annual Austrian society event which takes place in the building of the Vienna State Opera in Vienna, Austria on the Thursday preceding Ash Wednesday (a religious holliday). Each year, almost overnight, the auditorium of the Vienna State Opera is turned into a large ballroom. On the eve of the event, the rows of seats are removed from the stalls, and a new floor, level with the stage, is built. Together with the New Year Concert, the Opera Ball is one of the highlights of the Viennese carnival season. The dress code is evening dress: white tie and tails for men; ususally white floor-length gowns for women.
