Saint-Tropez: The Jet Set's Home Away From Home

SAINT-TROPEZ is not the place for recuperation. Stress-men and convalescents are better off in Monaco. The villas on the peninsula and the surrounding bay area are the scene of non-stop social action - spontaneous, euphoric and unconstrained. Make yourself amusing and attractive, active and available, and the portals to Saint-Tropez's social scene will slide open automatically.
All the familiar faces last seen in St. Moritz, London or Rio reappear en masse: the fading film star; the dapper captains of industry sporting yachting caps; the Davidoff devotees in Hawaii look, and last but not lagging, the clinging, swinging swarm of prêt-à-porter popsies. There are no language problems: the official form of social communication is a winsome smile and body-talk. English is reserved
for ordering drinks. French for impressing waiters, and German for intimidating importunate outsiders. For the happy insiders, Saint-Tropez is an intoxicating mixture of Nirvana and 'Paradise Regained'.
All the geometrically laid out beach clubs are expensive, the color of the sea more than suspect, the best tables in the restaurants always reserved, and the roads back into the town and elsewhere horribly congested. But nowhere do you get a more compelling impression of the life, luxury and libido of the Côte d'Azur than here. The strict observer of the rules and regulations of the round the clock Saint-Tropez routine is guaranteed to finish the circuit with a cozy berth on a yacht, a wild welcome at a non-stop party, or at least enough visiting cards to produce a prosperous bulge in his Bvlgari wallet.
Start with an espresso and croissants at Sénéquier at the crack of dawn. (Accessories: Giorgio Armani shirt, Yves Saint Laurent jeans, expensive Gucci horsebit loafers, no socks, a gift-bag of soft-persuasion baubles, waterproof status Tag Heuer wristwatch, bathing gear from Hermès, and the indispensable winsome smile.)
Then proceed to set up headquarters at Le Club 55, still one of the chic sandboxes. As the information center and assembly point of Saint-Tropez's Beautiful People, La Plage is invaluable. In no time you'll be awarded a strategically placed beach mattress. Then, with a cocktail at your side, relax and wait for the world to congregate at around eleven o'clock. And let the Games begin!
SAINT-TROPEZ FACTS: (Sant Tropetz in Occitan) is a Provençal town, 104 km (65 mi) to the east of Marseille, in the Var department of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region of southeastern France. It is also the principal town in the canton of Saint-Tropez.
It is located on the French Riviera, and it is known today for its famous and extremely wealthy summertime guests. It has been dubbed the 'playground to jetsetters, fashion models, and millionaires', and it is most-enduringly known as the place where the iconic Brigitte Bardot was "discovered" and for its role in the liberation of southern France during World War II.
Saint-Tropez has had a varied history. It was a 15th-century military stronghold, an unassuming fishing village at the beginning of the 20th century, and the first town on this coast to be liberated during World War II (as part of Operation Dragoon). After the war, it became an internationally-known seaside resort, renowned principally because of the influx of artists of the French New Wave in cinema and the Yé-yé movement in music. In latter years, it has been a resort for the European and American jet set and the inevitable hordes of tourists in search of a little Provençal authenticity and an occasional celebrity sighting.
The inhabitants of Saint-Tropez are called Tropéziens, and the town is familiarly called Saint-Trop'.

Museums & Sights
 - Annonciade Museum - 2, rue de l'Annonciade, Place Georges Grammont. Since 1922. The collection on show, ranges from 1890 to 1950. "The Annonciade Museum reminds us that the village of Saint-Tropez has been one of the most active centre of "avant-garde" painting at the beginning of the XXth Century, thanks to Paul Signac who, on board his ship l'Olympia, discovered this little fishing harbour in 1892."
 - ChÂteau de la Moutte - 6, allée des Canisses. Situated on Saint-Tropez peninsula. It was bought in 1860 by Emile Ollivier (French politician). He decided to do some work inside and outside in the gardens. The property grew from 6 hectares to more than 40 today. The town of Saint-Tropez is now in charge of the management of the property. It is open to public for the Heritage European Days and when concerts are organized in its garden in summer.
 - citadel of Saint-Tropez - 1 Montée de la Citadelle. Has been overlooking the village since the early XVII th century. "Composed by bastions and a hexagonal keep built between 1602 and 1608 on the drawings of engineer Raymond de Bonnefons, it is the most significant building between Antibes and Toulon."
 - Église Notre Dame de l'Assomption - 5, rue de l'Eglise. This Italian baroque-style church topped by a bell tower was built in 1784. It is one of the most recognisable sights in Saint-Tropez, with its bright ochre and earthy sienna coloured bell tower.
 - Latitude 43 - Avenue du Général Leclerc. The building is listed by the French Historic Monument Society since 1992. It is not open to public, except during the European Heritage Days when visitors can have access to corridors. Now, the inhabitants of the building are primarily co-owners.
 - Maison des Papillons (Butterfly House) - 17, rue Etienne Berny. Museum created by Dany Lartigue, son of the famous photographer Jacques-Henri Lartigue. In this typical Tropezian home, a fabulous selection of all the French diurnal species is on show.
 - Maritime Museum - at the Citadelle de Saint-Tropez. "The museum of maritime history is an invitation to discover famous Saint-Tropez heroes such as the Bailli de Suffren, the General Allard or Hyppolite Bouchard as well as thousands of anonymous folk who served the nation aboard the navy’s vessels or who faced stormy seas aboard merchant ships."
 - The Gendarmerie & Cinema Museum - 2, place Blanqui. The Gendarmerie and Cinema Museum invites you to discover the history of its building. Before becoming a symbolic place thanks to the movies about French Police Force (with Louis de Funès), this building welcomed the real Police Force from 1879 to 2003.

- Airport Saint-Tropez | La MÔle - Aeroport Golfe de Saint-Tropez International Airport - since 1964. IATA: LTT, ICAO: LFTZ) is an airport located in La Môle, 15 km (8 NM) southwest of Saint-Tropez. The airport is at an elevation of 59 feet (18 m) above mean sea level. It has one paved runway designated 06/24 (QFU 062° / 242°) which measures 1,180 by 30 metres (3,871 ft × 98 ft) with illuminated signs and a parallel taxiway. It is equipped with a PAPI. The airport buildings comprise a terminal building with a floor area of 750 m² featuring a bar, a hangar of 1,200 m², a gas station for Avgas aviation fuel and a weather station. It is suitable for the disabled and has parking for 100 cars. The terminal can handle up to 40,000 passengers per year. It is open to domestic civilian traffic; international service is possible on request 24 hours in advance. The main working hours are from 0700h to 1900 and on request from sunrise to sunset. It is not equipped to operate at night due to the lack of runway lights.
